Reflecting on 2024

The holiday season has passed and a new year has begun. It’s the perfect time to look back on all that we accomplished with the Domino Foundation Dominican Republic over the past year.

June: A Strong Start

On June 1st, we kicked off the year by sending out the first shipment of boxes filled with school supplies collected by the Bernadette Maria School in Delft and the St. Dionysius School in Schinnen. These boxes were further packed with clothing and toys before making their journey to Puerto Plata. By late July, the shipment arrived, just in time to distribute the school supplies for the new school year.

Transforming Lives Through Education

For the 2024-2025 school year, we were able to provide 80 children with complete school and sports uniforms, backpacks, and all the necessary school supplies. Thanks to generous donations, most of the supplies were covered, with only a small portion purchased additionally.
One story stands out: a 13-year-old boy named Alejandro was granted a scholarship to attend a private college for six years. This was made possible through the efforts of my dear friend Odile, who has contact with the school’s director. Alongside the scholarship, Alejandro also received a laptop and tutoring, which were funded within two weeks thanks to sponsoring. A detailed blog about Alejandro’s journey will follow soon.

October and the Second Shipment

On October 20th, we sent out our second shipment of the year, once again packed with clothing, shoes, toys, school supplies, toiletries and medicines. After a six-week journey, the boxes arrived in Puerto Plata on December 7th. With just seven days to sort through and organize the items, Odile stepped in again to help categorize clothing by size and gender, preparing everything for the annual clothing market.

December: Clothing and Toy Markets

On December 16th, we hosted the much-anticipated clothing market at Manguito School for 124 children. Parents arrived early, eagerly awaiting the chance to pick out clothing for their children. Each child was allowed four pieces of clothing, and by 10:00 a.m., every table was empty.

Two days later, on December 18th—the last school day of the year—we held the annual toy market for 124 kids. The day began with the usual ceremonies: a prayer, flag-raising, and the national anthem, followed by class performances of songs and dances. Meanwhile, we prepared tables laden with toys, stuffed animals, and craft kits. The children’s excitement was palpable; they could hardly wait to choose their favorites. Class by class, they carefully selected their treasures, with some facing delightful “decision stress” due to the abundance of options. Leftover stuffed animals were distributed to younger siblings, spreading even more joy.

Overcoming Challenges: The Christmas Food Hampers

December 19th marked the start of relentless rain, leading to floods, landslides, and impassable roads. Despite these challenges, we prepared Christmas food packages for families, thanks to donated funds. In previous years, families would collect their packages at a designated location, but this time, the weather made it impossible. Over three days, we personally delivered the packages, navigating through mud and high waters. By December 24th at 3:30 p.m., the final package was delivered, ensuring 28 children and their families had food for the holiday. Exhausted but fulfilled, we celebrated our own Christmas Eve with gratitude and pride.

Looking Ahead

The new year has already begun with donations arriving for the next school year and the upcoming Christmas markets. It’s heartwarming to witness the generosity of those who support these children through the Domino Foundation. With even more donations, we can expand our reach and impact.
Did you know you can now purchase souvenirs to support our cause? Items like keychains and diamond paintings are available, with all profits going directly to the foundation. Check out our ever-changing inventory and make a difference with your purchase.
